June 12 was a great day - a hot day, but great nonetheless. We got together in Newry Village and celebrated Oconee County's rich textile history with great music, food, tours, and crafts. Many thanks to the wonderful bands that played: Philip Cheney, Mountain Hoodoo, Doshena, Conservation Theory, Shades of Blue, and the Heritage String Band. Also thank you to our numerous sponsors who made the whole thing possible. We don't raise a lot of money, but we raise a lot of awareness, and that's the goal.
Also, the big news at the festival was the new plans for the restoration and renovation of the mill. Approximately 10-12 million dollars are projected to be spent on a plan that involves a complete historic renovation of the outside of the structure and a complete renovation of the inside into apartments. We are glad to see that the building is being saved and hope that this will be good for the community of Newry. Work is projected to start this September. More information will be posted as I receive it.
